About

Billesholm begins with one simple principle: to take wood seriously. Not as raw material in an abstract sense, but as something that stood somewhere, grew over time, and had a life before it became an object. We work with calm proportions, honest surfaces and simple form so the character of the material remains clear.

Billesholm began with old oak from shelterbelts and retired elm from the landscape around our farm in Vesthimmerland. It was timber that could easily have ended as woodchip, firewood or overlooked surplus. Instead, it was sawn at the mill and became the basis for a practice in which the material is allowed to decide more, and each piece is shaped with restraint. Each registered piece receives a serial number so its origin and basic history can be followed over time.

Values

  • Honest material. We do not try to conceal the character of the wood. Grain, tension, colour shifts and marks of time are allowed to remain part of the whole.
  • Nothing unnecessary. The work is kept simple. Each decision should be felt either in use or in the appearance of the material.
  • Serial number and traceability. Each registered piece receives a serial number so origin and key information can be followed over time.

Material sources

These material sources are examples of directions we often work with. The selection changes over time as new trees, batches and special opportunities appear.

  • Shelterbelt oak: Old oak rescued from shelterbelts before being uprooted and chipped, then sawn for continued use.
  • Retired elm: Elm taken down out of necessity and carried forward as useful material instead of being lost.
  • Reclaimed timber: Boards, beams and other parts from furniture, buildings and projects, selected for further use.
  • Commissioned timber: Client-supplied wood or material chosen specifically for a task, a room or a piece of furniture.

It is also possible to ask for specific timber species or material qualities. When timber has to be sourced specifically from a distributor or another external supplier, the documented story of the material may be less precise than with timber of known local origin.
